The Philodendron 'El Choco Red', scientifically renamed Philodendron rubrijuvenile in 2021, is a highly sought-after, exotic climbing aroid native to the Chocó region of Colombia and Ecuador. Its most distinctive feature is its large, heart-shaped, velvety dark green leaves that hide a striking secret: a brilliant, deep reddish-purple underside. This vibrant red coloration is most prominent in juvenile leaves—hence the name "rubrijuvenile"—and gradually fades as the foliage matures, though the back often retains a reddish tint. As a climbing epiphyte, it thrives when provided with a moss or coco pole to scramble up, requiring bright, indirect light, high humidity (60% or more), and a chunky, well-draining soil mix that is allowed to dry out halfway between waterings.
